What Are the Kese Scrub and Foam Massage — and Why Are They So Loved?

We explain what the hammam’s best-known pair actually are, how they are performed and who they suit.

Say “hammam” and most people picture abundant foam and a guest lying on marble. Behind that image are two separate treatments: the kese scrub and the foam massage. They are usually offered together, but they serve different purposes.

What is the kese?

The kese is the removal of dead surface cells with a mitt woven from silk or a similar fabric. It is only performed once the skin has warmed and been moistened — never on dry skin. Its aim is not a deep cleanse but a gentle clearing of the surface layer.

That is why the skin feels noticeably smoother afterwards. Intensity is adjusted to each guest; a softer approach is used for sensitive skin.

What is the foam massage?

The foam massage spreads dense foam whipped from olive-oil soap across the body using a cloth bag, with soft massage strokes applied through the foam. Here the aim is relaxation rather than cleansing. The slipperiness of the foam keeps the strokes flowing at a rhythm that never feels harsh.

Why are they combined?

The scrub clears the skin, and the foam both softens it and balances any sensitivity that might follow. This is why, in the classic hammam sequence, the scrub always comes before the foam — never the other way round.

Who are they suitable for?

Almost anyone with healthy skin can enjoy these treatments. Guests with open wounds, sunburn, eczema or similar skin conditions should consult their doctor first. The same advice applies during pregnancy.

How often?

It varies with skin type, but many of our guests find a visit every two weeks comfortable. Very frequent scrubbing can strain the skin’s natural balance, so our team generally recommends keeping to that interval.

What to do afterwards

Moisturising afterwards is a good idea. Drinking plenty of water, staying at least half an hour in the relaxation lounge and avoiding strong sun on the same day all extend the effect of the experience.
